Pazz & Jop Product Reports, 2020

As I explained just over a month ago about 2019 (and I’ll repeat verbatim here because laziness) Pazz & Jop Product Report was a monthly feature in the Village Voice music section in the late ’70s and early ’80s. Approximately ten critics a month (not always the same ones, and never including music editor Robert Christgau) graded mostly (but not always) new releases according to the following guidance: “Each critic votes up to 10 ‘yea’ records per month and awards each one 10 [masterpiece], 8, 7 [shades of recommended], 5 [borderline], 3, 2, or 1 [shades of listenable] votes….Each critic gets up to five ‘nay’ votes of between 1 and 4 minus points per month.” The column was topped by an aggregated and cumulative top-10 tally in which “a record is current in any month any critic names it a ‘yea’ for the first time”; “yea”s were added, “nay”s subtracted.

For the past couple years, I’ve been posting my own version of the Product Report on my facebook wall — first monthly, then twice monthly — as a means of keeping tabs on new releases even if (at least for now) I pretty much never write about them anymore. Below are lists I posted in 2020, starting in February since before that I was still just catching up with 2019 releases. I undoubtedly overrated some, and underrated others. I’ll add reports below as long as I’m primarily focused on music that came out in 2020, and will eventually attempt to include later ’20 discoveries in a comment footnote.
