Josie Cotton –> Katy Perry

One of the more contrived regular columns of my rock-crit career, the idea of this one was to take a current star and show how somebody maybe not quite as star-level from the past inadvertently paved the way, which usually required extremely forced logic. Spin ran a handful of them on its website, circa 2012-2013. Some of the individual installments came okay regardless (I included “Frank Chickens –> M.I.A.” and “Mayer Hawthorne <– Robert Palmer” in my fourth book); others were downright embarrassing (may “Sensational Alex Harvey Band –> Queens of the Stone Age” never see the light of day again). This one reads better than I remembered, thanks to a couple startling coincidences. I still get Katy Perry even less now than I did then.
